Brindlepaw followed close behind her mentor, Dawncloud, as they walked through the forest. Though her mentor was likely commenting on some hunting techniques, like how to find prey in other ways, Brindlepaw couldn't focus, which was unusual for the brindle and white patched apprentice. Turning around to face her, Dawncloud asked, "See?" Having picked up little of the conversation, Brindlepaw's tail dropped as she realized she had no idea what her mentor was talking about. Hearing and seeing the apprentice's tail fall, Dawncloud asked, "Brindlepaw, are you alright?"
Choking down the truth, she said, "I'm fine, Dawncloud. I'm just... a little distracted."
Dawncloud's gaze softened as she said, "Just try to pay attention again."
Turning back around, she began talking again, and Brindlepaw followed after her, her sleek, brindle and white coat blending with the colors of the trees and the forest floor.
Finally, when they turned in from their hunting lesson, the moon had begun rising. It was nearly full, as she observed, though she knew she wasn't going to this moon's gathering. And neither is Cedarpaw... She thought sadly. Adding her catch to the fresh-kill pile, Brindlepaw made her way back to the apprentice den, where she found a few of the apprentices still awake. Passing Crowpaw and Jaggedpaw, she just dipped her head, feeling a slight flutter of nervousness as she passed by the brothers. They were the oldest apprentices in the den, and were well known for their slight tempers. Successfully passing them, she made her way over to the apprentices of her own age, (about a moon younger than the toms), who were mostly asleep, except for one or two. Seeing Cedarpaw's reddish brown form in the dimness of the half-light, she found herself in front of the tom.
Smirking slightly in his way, Cedarpaw whispered to her, "It's happening tonight, right?" Brindlepaw just nodded, afraid that she was making a big mistake by arranging this. Sure, Heatherpaw and Cedarpaw were her friends... but she still felt bad about it. Leaving to go to her bed, she laid down, but she knew she wasn't going to get sleep, not tonight anyway. Curling her blotched tail around herself, she watched as the other apprentices, including the two brothers at the front, eventually fell asleep.
When the moon's bright rays finally illuminated everything in the camp from directly above, Brindlepaw silently edged over to Cedarpaw, nudging him quietly awake. Obviously excited, it didn't take much to wake him, and he immediately took the hint to be quiet. Carefully stepping out of the den, and extremely careful to not wake the others, they gingerly snuck out of camp. Avoiding the two cats stationed at the camp's entrance, they were able to cautiously and silently get out of camp.
Once out, they picked up their pace, but Brindlepaw found herself lagging behind a little. Glancing up at the Silverpelt for a second, she asked, "Cedarpaw, are you sure you're going to do this? I mean... I've got a bad feeling."
Cedarpaw whispered back, "Are you kidding? Brindlepaw, I know you're a great apprentice, and you know a lot of things... But you need to loosen up a bit. The Warrior Code can't guide your every action, especially when you're an apprentice."
Brindlepaw opened her mouth to protest, but Cedarpaw pulled ahead of her, and she found herself following him to Russetclan and Swiftclan's border. As they neared it, they got lower and lower on their bellies, so that they were almost crawling by the time they got to the border. They could smell the border just in front of them, the dead tree that extended over the small stream marking the border.
Calling softly, Brindlepaw asked, "Heatherpaw? Are you here?"
Heatherpaw's soft voice traveled over the water, "I'm here." Seeing her friend's golden tabby head appear on the other side of the wooden log. Her features brightening as she saw Cedarpaw, Brindlepaw couldn't help feeling a bit sick.
"Are... are you guys sure you can do this? And what if they ask me what happened? I'm not sure I can lie to them..."
The three apprentices stood, Heatherpaw leaping over the log so that she could stand in front of them, though on the other side of the stream. "Trust me, Brindlepaw. We can do this." Cedarpaw glanced warmly at Heatherpaw before nodding his agreement.
"You know, you worry too much, Brindlepaw. We'll be fine. We'll be long gone by the first dawn patrol, and no one will question you. As far as they know, you were sleeping when we left, remember?" Sighing a bit, Cedarpaw rubbed against Brindlepaw, trying to comfort her, "I promise we'll be alright. And you've been my friend long enough to know that I'll never break a promise."
Brindlepaw looked down, hesitating, "But... Cedarpaw... that's not what I'm upset about..." She choked down a knot in her throat. Cedarpaw tilted his head a bit, but Brindlepaw couldn't find the nerve to say it. Shaking her head, she replied softly, "No... just... go... Be happy together... I won't get in your way."
Heatherpaw dipped her head in respect, as did Cedarpaw, as they made their way into the stream and began walking. "Goodbye Brindlepaw..." Her friend called back. Hoping that at least the river would cover their scent, she turned around... but she couldn't take it anymore.
Whirling back around, she called out, "Cedarpaw, you can't do this... I... I love you!"
[Just a random short story that I put together. Hope you liked it!]
